Ivy Restaurant (The), Covent Garden, London

Ivy Restaurant (The)

1 West Street  Covent Garden
London
WC2H 9NE

The Ivy Restaurant first opened in 1917, established its heyday in the 1930s being greatly favoured by those in the theatrical world. Famous diners from this era include Noel Coward and Laurence Olivier. The heyday has continued undiminished as have the close associations with film and theatre, stars and personalities.

The present owners are Chris Corbin and Jeremy King who refurbished the Ivy in 1990 but retained the original design features of stained glass windows, green leather seating and wood panelling. They added various paintings and other works from their private collection of 19th and late 20th century art.

The a la carte menu is compact and comprehensive with studied variety and balance. Hors d'oeuvres include sautéed foie gras, steak tartare and acorn fed black iberico ham. There is a choice of seven salads e.g. pousse spinach & Roquefort salad and three soups including crab bisque. Crab and oysters are a preamble to further delights of the deep including loin of blue fin tuna and grilled halibut with sautéed ceps and herb butter. There is a variety of grills and roasts ranging from The Ivy hamburger to roast poulet des landes with truffle jus and dauphin potatoes. And on it goes - enough exquisite choice for any star of stage and screen.

The wine list is splendid with a large selection chosen with knowledge
