| Recently refurbished, Christopher’s manages to combine being a restaurant of substance whilst retaining a light hearted charm. A sense of space contributes to this feeling of ease beginning in the ground floor bar where there is a pleasing depth to the wood layered bar itself. It invites the weary to pull up a bar stool and rest a while or sink into a comfortable seat. Natural light abounds assisted by a collection of ceiling globes of different sizes and heights.
The restaurant upstairs is bright and welcoming with a splendid mirror at the end of the room above a fine fireplace. The table settings are beautiful, the décor lightsome.
As the name suggests, Christopher’s American Bar & Grill has American culinary influences, specifically the East Coast steak and oyster houses fondly remembered by all who visit the area. However, other influences are apparent, sitting well on the American motherlode.
Starters include carpaccio of beef “Harry’s Bar” style and Maryland crab cake with roast pepper mayo and Chesapeake Bay crab bisque.
The impressive list also includes ballotine of salmon with salsa verde and Nantucket prawn & lobster fritters with saffron mayo and shellfish oil.
Europe and America join forces to provide the main courses as well.
Mid-Western Meatloaf with "Monterey" mash, thyme, wild mushroom jus and the blackened salmon with
buttered greens, tasso ham, lemon & drawn butter speak for the Land of the Free.
Europe provides calves liver with roast onion mash: Christopher's Steak Tartar with sweet potato polenta fries and green salad.
Grilled steaks are another raison d’etre of the house and are not to be missed.
Desserts such as baked New York cheesecake with crème Chantilly and pecan tart with maple walnut ice cream conspire to ruin the girlish figure, but why worry about that at a time like this!
The wine list, which favours New World producers, is thoughtfully chosen, has some very reasonably priced wines and compliments the cuisine perfectly.
Finally, for those who wish to share the pleasures of Christopher’s with large numbers of friends at the same time, the former Speakeasy Bar is now a venue available for private hire.
