| Located directly opposite The Royal Opera House this is a splendid airy restaurant which uses its balcony location to great advantage with daylight flooding through the copious glass walls and roofing of the terrace. This also extends to the Cafe Bar which claims to be the longest zinc bar in the UK and imported specially from Paris. The entrance to the Zinc Bar is from the Jubilee Market.
There is a fine selection of traditional French hors d’oeuvres costing on average about £6 and including such delights as escargots a l’ail, foie gras, gravadlax and charcuterie.
Main courses such as steak tartare and confit de canard are Heaven sent as is the côte de boeuf.
The restaurant boasts the best steak frites west of Paris but those who prefer fish are by no means forgotten: grilled fillet of sea bass with artichokes and red onion is there to tempt as is roasted Cornish monkfish tail. Main courses cost anything from £8.25 to £24.95 and there are frequently set menu offers.
The Cafe Bar serves straightforward French food including onglet frites and moules et frites. These plats chauds cost on average £6.00. There is also a choice of sandwiches and salads. The wine list at this very impressive restaurant is every bit as accomplished as the menu and one can do no better than urge the visitor to read at length and make a leisurely selection.
As it is located in a beautiful Grade II listed building, some further comment is appropriate on the design of Chez Gerard at The Opera Terrace. There would be little point in having the best looking terrace in Covent Garden and not using it to full advantage. Therefore, the Cafe/Bar has an al fresco section seating 35 and the Restaurant outside seating for 56, equipped with heating lamps which extend the Covent Garden summer by a good few weeks every year. The a la carte Restaurant seats 106 and the Zinc Bar 34; room for everybody with no crowding.
