20 Upper St Martins Lane Covent Garden
Spacious, but retaining a sense of intimacy, the ground floor has a very pleasing, substantial bar, with an alluring array of bottles, a brass bar top and good elbow leaning ambiance. The furnishings are unstinting with comfortable upholstered seats at tables around the walls, next to the windows to afford a good view of the world going by.
On draft, Courage Directors, John Smiths, Kronenbourg, Fosters, Guinness and Strongbow cider can all be had. Wine can be bought by the glass and a choice of five red and five white wines is very reasonably priced .
The menu takes care of all needs from snacks to very adequate restaurant fayre. There is a wide and imaginative choice – a dozen or so snacks such as tortilla chips with beef chilli dip and olives with cubed feta cheese; wraps and baguettes; jacket potatoes and burgers. Main courses include the essential fish and chips, steak kidney and barley wine pie, scampi and chips and, as a new dimension in pub food - Goan chicken curry. The Basement Bar is essential viewing with bright colours, oak wood flooring and a very attractive wooden bar. The bar area curves round with recesses and intimate tables. There is an interesting variety of seating with different fabrics and colours and tables of different height and there is TV with plasma screen showing Digital Sport and Sky News. Have a drink and stay informed! A point to note - it is available for private functions.
