VIEW FROM THE PIAZZA
By Andy Wood

Thanks for all your reponses to my first article, it's great to see a healthy international interest in the fine art of street performance.

Autumn in Covent Garden
As the leaves turn brown and the cold, cold winter draws in, the exotic Australians and World Travellers head for the southern hemisphere and Covent Garden becomes a very different place: the English entertainers return.

Far from being quiet it's a veritable street performers festival as the European-wide festival work dwindles to nothing and Covent Garden becomes one of the few places left to work in England. It's common to find 20 entertainers turning up for West Piazza shows on a weekend day when due to the everdwindling daylight there are even less spots available. Excellent acts in town at present include the UNCLES, a superb comedy juggling duo back from Holland; Charlie, a sublime Chaplinesque silent mime from Switzerland; a spattering of African dancers; side street football skill performers; and a heap of statues and oddities in James Street.

We have found over the years that it is still possible to entertain until the temperature goes below 3°C! Yours truly, Tiger Bond, finds that the colder it gets the more impressive his tigerpants finale is to Joe Public!

So keep in touch, do come to Covent Garden in Winter - it's a rare street wonderland just when you'd think it's all over - and do go up and compliment the street performers after the show if you've enjoyed it. We love it, and often it can be a thankless public service!
