Street Entertainers

Today the street performers of Covent Garden perform finely crafted shows derived from years of training and practicing the art globally. Covent Garden attracts worldwide performers wishing to share their much admired skill and talent with visitors, locals and tourists alike. Far from being entirely reliant on foreign tourist audiences, they are a well established and appreciated part of the London community. The West Piazza is the most well known pitch capable of gathering a large crowd of more than 200 watchers. As well as local performers Covent Garden has an `open pitch' policy inviting visiting performers during the Summer months to showcase their skills. Musicians now also perform regularly in and around Covent Garden.

History

Now one of London's most popular tourist attractions, for much of its existence Covent Garden served as a fruit and vegetable market the largest in England. This market occupied the whole of the square and many of the nearby buildings. The wholesale produce has now moved to New Covent Garden Market in south London and the original site has been transformed beyond all recognition offering an variety of stalls from hand made jewellery to posh chocolates.

Royal Opera House

The wonderous Royal Opera House, just off the north piazza, was built in 1809 on the site of a theatre dating back to 1732. Two theatres have been previously destroyed by fire but the current Royal Opera House was rebuilt and reopened in 2000 to great architecture acclaim. There are performances throughout the year showcasing exquisite ballet and opera performances. Original historical material is displayed for free to the wider public in the ROH costume cases and the Amphitheatre Gallery
